How to Get the Right People in the Right Seats

This concept has been said in various ways such as “get the right people on the bus” (by Jim Collins) but many business owners find it difficult to implement. In this podcast, our founder, Janey Stahl, explains how to do this in simple steps.

Show notes

How do you get the right people in the right seats?

Follow these steps in order:

  1. Articulate your values

    • which behaviors' exemplify the company’s values?

    • list those behaviors in the job descriptions, handbook, and performance evaluations

  2. Then fill the right seat by setting clear expectations around that role

    • determine which tasks, or job duties, need to be completed

    • determine which job title, job family, and pay grade those duties align to

    • list the required duties, skills, and qualifications in the job description - this will attract the right people and repel the wrong people

  3. In order to hire the right people:

  • hire character, train skill

  • in the interview, use a scorecard with the values and skills listed so you can fairly score each job candidate

  • make sure you reassess and match employees’ skills to the roles (or seats); sometimes people will need to be moved around

How does getting the right employee to the right seat really impact a business?

It makes the business more profitable because:

  • employees want 1) meaningful work and 2) to be able to utilize their strengths

  • if they have both elements in their career, they will be engaged and motivated. They will buy into the vision and be accountable.

  • engaged employees are more productive and collaborative

  • Productivity = profit
